Japan’s National Living Treasures

Japan’s National Living Treasures

What a beautiful idea…Eighty and appreciated. A life time of art and craft summed up in a single statement of value.

Like being knighted in Briton, but somehow more direct.

You are a treasure.

In the case of Ryozo Kawakita, the slow solitary work of a wood turner. An oversimplification at best. A sensitive artist working in wood, lacquer and gold leaf.

See photos: poetry by way of hands.

Working with his son Hirohiko, Mr. Kawakita is lithe, agile, glowing, …. still in his prime.

My hero.
